How is building
like a
city?
Design inspiration was undergoing present day
process of adaptation of historical warehouses in this area.
ARTHOUSE doesn’t try to resist, but on the contrary, was created with
possibility of adaptation in the future.
The study of NQ territory revealed a grid which then was translated into the
architectural language became the key design driver.

ARTHOUSE
is based with the idea of adaptation of use
in the future of the building, inspired by
the current transformations of historical
warehouses in Manchester and its structural
constrains.

POETICS OF SPACE
ARCHITECTURAL MASSING
LIGHTING CONCEPT
TECTONICS
TERRITORY GRID
of the Northern Quarter
is reflected through ARCHITECTURAL GRID
of the building which was developed in plan, section
and elevation
ceiling plan
TECTONICS:
architectural grid is expressed on the ceiling and
linearity on the concrete finishing on the walls
MIXED USE FLEXIIBILITY:
in order to accomodate working space, movable walls
were installed in studio
PHENOMENOLOGICAL THEORY
ARTHOUSE explores phenomenological aspects of kinesthetic and multisensory perception of the human body into architecture theory. It is the philosophical study of the structures of consciousness from a first-person perspective. In terms of architecture and design, phenomenology is the study and exploration of the physical experience of buildings, building material, and their sensory properties.

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS
1/50 SECTIONAL BAY DETAIL
1/20 TECHNICAL DETAIL WINDOW
1/20 TECHNICAL DETAIL ROOF
Architectural technical detailing at two scales
explores materiality through sectional drawings.
MATERIALITY AND
SUSTAINABILITY:
Primary building cladding is concrete. While concrete appears
as not the most sustainable
choice,
however I found it useful for
its:
THERMAL MASS that can be
harevested in the key openiengs
in the facade and roof. Secondly
CONCRETE FINISHING that
is achieved by exposing the
structure, is a cost effective
solution and also low maintaince
in the long term which is great
for public building and big flow
of people as I've seen during the
construction site visit.
BRICK is
ubiquitous in Manchester so that
the facade can be manufactured
in the close proximity to the
building site. Moreover, BRICK ages well in Manchester
unlike observed concrete facades
so that would not need special
maintaince in the future.
